As someone who wants to be a teacher, inclusivity is crucial. I want to make sure that all students are engaged, and understand what is being delivered. My role as an instructor will be to ensure that whatever is taught is being delivered in a variety of ways to guarantee the needs of all students. Which includes all students from different backgrounds, learning styles, and abilities who have the chance to be successful and feel valued. It is essential to be inclusive when dealing with education, as it is such a broad concept.
This goes back to my previous blog post, and how it is important to understand your style of intelligence. Everyone is intelligent and capable of success, it is just that their ability to reach their goals may differ. The last thing I would want is a student who thinks they are incapable of learning something because they are not being taught properly. Just like my high school math teacher, the first thing I would do is an intelligence test
.
This test helps me as an instructor to understand how I would approach a student when teaching them a new concept. And this teaches the student, a technique that will help them understand what methods are required to succeed.
My group chose the topic of technology addiction. The concept of addiction is very sensitive and sometimes personal. As an instructor, I would make sure that all students feel welcomed and safe during this lecture. I would make sure that all students feel safe and accepted, I would also add in my personal experiences so the environment is included. To add to inclusivity, I would also let students share their thoughts and experiences. This would also give a chance to have different perspectives, especially since experiences when regarding any topic is subjective.
As my group members, Sinead and Colton have mentioned in their blog post, lots of students have trouble with writing or English. In order to ensure that students are not having difficulties due to their inability with writing or English, I would adapt to different kinds of material and learning approaches. I would provide visual examples (pictures and videos), audio (podcasts), and hands-on activities for kinesthetic learners.
I think it is important to understand that as an instructor, I would not be teaching students as a whole and gluing them together as one person. But that they are all individual people, who have individual and unique methods to learn.

Well put Harleen. I like how you included the intelligence test. It is so important that students recognize that their skills are going to be completely different than the next student. It reminds me a bit of a powerful youtube video I saw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paVkw5ZmsG4 based on “a world where fish are no longer forced to climb trees. I feel like this would be a great video to show students in pairing with the intelligence test so they could get a visual representation as well. Hopefully this would contribute to much more confident students and inclusive learning!

Hi Harleen! I totally agree. I also want to be a teacher and find that even with the little experience I have had in classrooms, learning styles vary from student to student so much. Having knowledge about what kind of learner each of the students are is just as important as the information that is being taught! I like that you recognize that each students is individual and has different needs from everyone else. Thanks for sharing 🙂
